Cat & Dog CBD FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
CBD for pets can be a bit overwhelming when you're starting out, so here are some basic terms and tips that can help.
What is Hemp Extract?
Organic Hemp Extract is a botanical extract derived from our hemp that contains less than 0.3% THC on a dry weight basis. At Earth Buddy we like to call it “Colorado Style” hemp that is “non-intoxicating”. Instead of single molecule CBD (cannabidiol) or "Isolate CBD", the Organic Hemp Extract we use contains a wide array of naturally occurring cannabinoids and terpenes that promote an entourage of benefits that engages the Endogenous Cannabinoid System (ECS).

What is Cannabidiol?
Cannabidiol is the prominent naturally occurring plant-based cannabinoid that is the most abundant molecule from the organic hemp we use in all of our products. Along with naturally occurring terpenes and other cannabinoids these plant compounds are showing great promise for daily supplementary use.
What is the difference between Hemp Extract and CBD?
Hemp Extract is our way of describing our pet products as being a full-spectrum extract that does not refine or process the raw botanical compounds once it goes through the extraction process. This means that the product will always contain the listed amount of cannabinoids (CBD, CBG, CBDa, CBN), but will also contain a wide variety of minor bio-active compounds like minor cannabinoids and terpenes. This speaks to the Entourage Effect that states the whole plant is great than the sum of its individual parts.
The biggest difference between Hemp Extract and CBD is that Hemp Extract is a full-spectrum of plant compounds that work in synergy and is a less processed and more natural product. CBD, single-molecule or isolate CBD is where they take the extract and remove all other botanical compounds with the use of chemical processes that leave them with pure CBD. Although many use these "isolate" products and experience benefits, Earth Buddy believes in keeping our products as true and natural as the plants we grow. Many of the chemicals used to make "isolate" are also harmful to the environment and therefore it is not something Earth Buddy will use in their pet products. We will always keep your pets safety and health in mind when formulating our products and that is why we believe full-spectrum, natural plant extracts will be the best for your Fur Buddy!
How does CBD for pets work?
Cannabidiol or CBD for pets activates and engages the ECS (Endogenous Cannabinoid System) to encourage balance or homeostasis. This molecule not only interacts with our pet's ECS, but also acts on various systems in the body that manage discomfort and mood.
Will Hemp Extract get my pet “high”?
Colorado has one of the most well regulated Industrial Hemp programs in the world, in that they do not allow the levels of THC to exceed 0.3% at any step of the process. This means that all of our products will never have a level of THC over 0.3%, which will not get your pet “high”. Pets cannot tell us how they feel when under the influence of THC, so as a company we decided to always use hemp grown under the guidelines of Colorado Industrial Hemp program.
How long before I see any effects from using Hemp Extracts?
We feel that Hemp for pets is an individualized supplement and pet parents should always monitor the demeanor, digestion, and behavior of their pet. Every pet is different based on size, age, breed, and predisposition so start low and go slow!
We recommend that you supplement all of our products for at least 7-10 days with our suggested dosages on our labels and adjust accordingly for best results. Keep plenty of water available and try to supplement daily for optimal results.
What is the Endocannabinoid System (ECS)?
All mammals have an Endocannabinoid System (ECS) that helps the body maintain a healthy biological balance. This means our bodies, as well as our pets, are producing cannabinoids on its own. Mother Nature in her infinite wisdom created a plant with an abundance of these same compounds that we can extract from our Organic Hemp and supplement. This system acts on many peripheral systems within the body that regulates mood, appetite, discomfort management, digestion, and much more in the area of research is on the horizon for its chemical function in the body.

What is cannabis?
Cannabis is from the genus of plant called cannabis sativa. The hemp plants we use to derive our CBD are from the cannabis sativa-L family, but are bred to produce high CBD and very low THC (less than 0.3%). Cannabis can have many different molecular make-ups dependent on how the seeds genetics are bred and what they're for.
What are cannabinoids?
Cannabinoids are molecules produced in abundance in the cannabis plant within flower or bud. The cannabis plant produces over 150 of these molecules. Cannabinoids, when consumed, work to engage or activate our ECS (Endogenous Cannabinoid System) in mammals. Cannabinoids also interact with many other chemical systems within the mammalian body to help balance or modulate discomfort, stress or immune function.
What are terpenes?
Terpenes are what gives the cannabis or hemp plant its natural defense system against fungal infection and/or harmful insects. The plant produces a wide variety of these and create the smell or essence.
Although there is not a large concentration of any single terpene found in hemp, in combination with other cannabinoids, these essential oils from hemp will create an Entourage Effect of benefits.
For example, Beta-caryophylene is often found in hemp or cannabis and is also found in black pepper. It has been well researched around its benefits on inflammatory response and bacterial balance effects.

What is the Entourage Effect?
The Entourage Effect refers to a well researched phenomenon where there is a predominant molecule (CBD) and many minor plant compounds (cannabinoids and terpenes) creating a synergy in which there is a boosted effect of the CBD in our case. Cannabidiol (CBD) on its own requires much higher doses for efficacy, while when it is paired with these minor plant compounds it creates a much greater response in lower doses. In summary, the whole plant extract is greater than its individual parts.
Why is there Black Pepper in the hemp hearts?
All of our Hemp Hearts contain Turmeric for dogs and cats and will also have a small amount of Black Pepper for the sole purpose of increasing bioavailability. Studies have shown that when Turmeric is supplemented with black pepper it becomes 2000% more absorbable. Black pepper also contains Beta-caryophylene, which is a terpene found in cannabis that has shown to have positive benefits for the inflammatory response pathway and stress.

How much CBD oil should I give my dog or cat?
The ultimate goal of our dosage is to achieve a minimal effective dose. Every dog is a little different, so results may vary with age, breed, size, and predisposition. We base all of our recommended dosages on the weight of the animal. That said, we feel that Hemp Extracts are an individualized supplement and have to be monitored on an “as needed” basis.
Note: Puppies typically have a healthy ECS (Endocannabinoid System), so they do not need to supplement our hemp extract products. Always consult with a holistic veterinarian if you are unsure.
Dosing with CBD for pets is not an exact science, as not all CBD pet products are the same. All of our products have Certificates of Analysis by 3rd-party laboratories and we only use full spectrum hemp extract that will contain high amounts of CBD along with many other minor cannabinoids (CBC, CBDV, CBG) and terpenes. As a general starting point with our products we recommend the following dosage, but keep in mind that you know your pet better than us and you can always increase or decrease on an as-needed basis:
1-3mg per 10lbs body weight as a starting dose.
*Many studies involving CBD for animals have shown a much higher dosage for severe issues around 1mg per 2.2lbs of body weight. But since we are using a full-spectrum hemp in all of our products we do not think this is an appropriate starting point for most pets.
